MTN Nigeria Invests $4.8 Million To Revamp 52 Rural Health Centres

Telecommunications giant, MTN Nigeria through its CSR arm, MTN Foundation is partnering the Private Sector Health Alliance of Nigeria (PSHAN) to revitalize 52 primary healthcare centers across the country.

The collaboration, which will see MTN Nigeria investing 2.2 billion naira ($4.8 million), aims to significantly boost healthcare access and services at the grassroots level. The centers will undergo extensive renovations, have solar-powered boreholes installed for clean water access, be equipped with alternative power sources like batteries and solar panels, and have their personnel comprehensively trained.

Medical equipment and consumables will also be provided to enable the centers to effectively serve their surrounding communities.

Speaking at the memorandum signing recently, Executive Director of the MTN Nigeria Foundation, Odunayo Sanya, said, “At the MTN Nigeria Foundation we are passionate about the wellbeing of our communities and are clear about our role as a catalyst for sustainable development.

“Our partnership is proof that the private sector is indeed a strong partner when it comes to sustainable development.  The scope of the programme includes: remodeling of 52 centers, installation of 52 solar powered boreholes, provision of alternative power (battery & solar), training of the personnel, provision of medical equipment and consumables,” she revealed.

The collaboration has been widely praised for demonstrating the positive impact businesses can have on society when leveraging their expertise and resources strategically.

Sanya expressed gratitude to MTN customers whose loyalty enables the company’s philanthropic arm to undertake such initiatives, as well as to the communities, general public, and Nigeria as a whole.

With over 190 million people, Nigeria faces numerous healthcare challenges including inadequate access, poor facilities, and shortage of medical professionals. The MTN-PSHAN partnership represents a crucial step in strengthening primary care delivery which forms the base of the healthcare pyramid.
