The Federal Government has turned its attention on the nation’s burgeoning drone sector, unveiling a comprehensive policy direction aimed at unlocking the industry’s transformative potential. With this, the random use of drones for movies, advertising, media coverage and other related areas would be extensively streamlined.

This decision, made public on February 12, 2026, underscores the administration’s commitment to positioning Nigeria as a continental leader in drone technology, applications, and regulation

The Honorable Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, SAN, declared, “The new National Policy on Drones is pivotal for technological advancement, job creation, and ensuring Nigeria’s competitive edge in the evolving global digital economy.”

According to government officials, the newly articulated policy framework lays out clear guidelines for drone operations, safety standards, and investment incentives. The initiative, developed in partnership with industry stakeholders, academia, and regulatory bodies, aims to foster innovation while safeguarding Nigeria’s airspace.

Industry experts have welcomed the move. “This is a game-changer for agriculture, logistics, and security,” said Dr. Okechukwu Onu, a leading drone technology consultant. “With the right policy backing, Nigeria’s drone ecosystem can attract global capital and talent.”

The policy also seeks to streamline licensing, promote local manufacturing, and encourage research and development. Keyamo noted, “We want to empower Nigerian entrepreneurs and position our youth to take advantage of emerging opportunities in drone technology.”

The Federal Government’s strategic focus aligns with global trends, as nations worldwide integrate drones into critical sectors. The National Policy on Drones cements Nigeria’s intention to not only keep pace but to innovate and lead.

As the nation stands at the cusp of a new era in unmanned aviation, all eyes are on policymakers and industry players to ensure the successful implementation of this forward-thinking agenda.
