Africa’s Aviation Industry Achieves Double-Digit Growth: 24.8 Million Seat Capacity Signals Continental Recovery

Africa’s aviation industry reached a milestone in March 2026, with total airline capacity climbing to 24.8 million seats, a robust 10.4% year-over-year increase that signals sustained recovery in continental air travel demand. The growth reflects expanding connectivity across both international and domestic routes, positioning Africa’s aviation brands as key enablers of regional economic integration.
The expansion demonstrates strategic diversification across market segments. International capacity represented 77% of total capacity with a 10.2% increase versus March 2025, while domestic capacity grew by 10.8%, indicating strengthening regional connectivity alongside long-haul expansion. Mainline carriers accounted for 79% of total capacity, posting 10.4% growth, while low-cost carriers increased by 10.1% to reach 5.2 million seats, a performance distribution that reflects market maturity and competitive positioning across operational models.
Leading carriers demonstrated mixed growth trajectories aligned with regional demand patterns. Ethiopian Airlines maintained its position as Africa’s top carrier with 1,970,341 seats, recording 4.0% year-on-year growth, while Safair achieved 1,082,610 seats with 13.4% expansion and Egyptair followed with 848,102 seats, up 7.5%. Regional carriers captured notable market share gains, with Air Algérie and Royal Air Maroc recording strong increases of 17.9% and 26.6% respectively, while South African Airways achieved 25.5% growth. Notably, Kenya Airways was the only top-10 carrier to record a decline at 1.3%, highlighting competitive pressures within specific markets.
The sustained growth reinforces Africa’s aviation sector as a critical infrastructure investment domain. Rising capacity, coupled with enhanced international connectivity through carriers like Ryanair and Emirates, signals brands’ commitment to positioning Africa as an increasingly accessible continental destination, essential messaging for tourism, trade, and business travel narratives in an interconnected global marketplace.
