SON Shuts Samsung Lagos Office

The Standards Organisation of Nigeria, SON, on Tuesday sealed the premises of Samsung West Africa in Victoria Island, Lagos, for failure to register some of its products being marketed in Nigeria.
Bola Fashina, Head of Public Relations, SON, made this known in a statement delivered in Abuja. According to him, SON records showed that many Samsung products being sold in the Nigerian markets were not registered.
Fashina said that the representatives of the company claimed that they were not aware of the need to register the products claiming that they only marketed the products but did not import nor sold them.
The Public Relations officer explained that it was the duty of the distributors to register the products.
He equally stated that the sealing of Samsung premises was in line with the provisions of the SON Act 14 of 2015 which provides for every product imported into Nigeria to be registered with SON for traceability and confirmation of quality status.
The Public Relations officer assured Samsung that the facility would be reopened once the company registers all its products as required by law.
The mandate of the SON include preparation of sandards relating products, measurements, materials, processes and services amongst others and their promotion at National, Regional and International levels. The body is also responsible for the certification of products, assistance in the production of quality goods and services; improvement of measurement accuracies and circulation of information relating to standards.
