Nigeria’s eNaira Hits Top Position In Global Digital Currency League

Africa’s first digital currency, eNaira, has been ranked the No 1 global retail Central Bank Digital Currency (CBDC) in the world, and app downloads have jumped to 756,000. Nigeria was ranked number 1 ahead of 9 other countries in the world with digital currencies.

In second and third positions are the Bahamas and China respectively. Next were, Jamaica, Eastern Caribbean, Ukraine, Uruguay, Thailand, Sweden, and the Republic of Korea.

The index is based on a BIS working paper, the World Bank, and PwC analysis. PwC disclosed its ranking in the 2022 CBDC Global Index and Stablecoin Overview that the eNaira has also recorded 700,000 downloads as of December 2021.

Last week, the Managing Director of Guaranty Trust Bank, Mariam Olusanya, while speaking in a virtual press conference after the Bankers Committee’s meeting, confirmed that e-naira wallet downloads have risen to 756,000 in six months. Thus, eNaira grew by 56,000 within the first quarter of 2021.

Miriam Olusanya, also said at the same briefing that the consumer wallet has 165,000 downloads and the merchant wallet 2,800.
