Google has opened applications for the 10th cohort of its Startups Accelerator Africa, signalling a renewed focus on artificial intelligence and machine learning for startups across the continent. The programme is designed for Series A startups using AI to develop solutions that address real-world challenges in Africa. Applications close on March 18, 2026, and the selected startups will participate in a 12-week hybrid programme combining virtual sessions and in-person engagements.

The accelerator provides participating startups with access to Google’s technical resources, mentorship from experienced professionals, and networking opportunities with investors, industry leaders, and fellow founders. The programme aims to help founders scale their ideas into sustainable businesses while strengthening the African AI ecosystem.

For African startups, this cohort matters because it goes beyond surface-level support. By focusing on AI and machine learning, Google is encouraging innovation that can tackle complex problems across healthcare, infrastructure, research, and data-driven decision-making. It represents a shift in global perception. Africa is not just a market for technology, but a hub for research-led solutions and scientific breakthroughs.

Since its launch in 2018, the Google for Startups Accelerator Africa has supported more than 180 startups from 17 countries, helping them raise over $350 million in funding and create more than 3,700 direct jobs. Alumni span sectors from health tech to enterprise software and logistics, demonstrating the programme’s wide-reaching impact on the continent’s tech landscape.

Folarin Aiyegbusi, Head of Startup Ecosystem for Africa, described this cohort as an opportunity to turn African startups into research and innovation labs. “The idea is not only to build companies, but to support founders who are experimenting, learning, and pushing the boundaries of what technology can do in African contexts,” he said.

Interested founders who meet the eligibility criteria, being at Series A stage, based in Africa or developing Africa-focused solutions, and leveraging AI as a core part of their product, can apply through the Google Startups Accelerator Africa portal before the March 18 deadline.

The 10th cohort reflects the growing maturity of Africa’s tech ecosystem and signals a long-term commitment by global players like Google to invest in advanced technologies, deep-tech solutions, and sustainable innovation across the continent.
