Airtel Africa has notched a groundbreaking milestone, successfully testing SpaceX’s Starlink Mobile direct-to-cell service in Kenya’s remote dead zones, paving the way for seamless connectivity across its 14 markets, including Nigeria, starting 2026. The trials, conducted in areas bereft of traditional cell towers, proved flawless on standard 4G-compatible smartphones, enabling WhatsApp calls, Facebook Messenger, and Airtel app transactions via Starlink’s constellation of 650 satellites.

This leap builds on a late-2025 partnership making Airtel Africa the first African mobile operator to deploy Starlink Direct-to-Cell tech to its 174 million subscribers. “Airtel Africa and SpaceX are pleased to announce the successful testing of data and messaging services with Starlink Mobile in Kenya,” the companies stated, highlighting how 4G phones bridged the terrestrial signal void effortlessly.

Expansion plans target commercial roll-out across Chad, DR Congo, Gabon, Kenya, Madagascar, Malawi, Niger, Nigeria, Republic of Congo, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia, pending regulatory nods. Initial services focus on messaging and light data, with voice and high-speed broadband via Starlink Mobile V2 on the horizon for enhanced performance. Airtel Africa’s CEO Sunil Taldar emphasized the strategic fit: the service complements tower infrastructure to erase coverage gaps in urban fringes and rural expanses. SpaceX echoed the vision, noting next-gen satellites will deliver “20x improved data speed” for essential services.

In Nigeria, Airtel CEO Dinesh Balsingh told journalists the rollout will unlock connectivity where terrestrial builds falter, revolutionizing access for underserved Nigerians. Social buzz on X and Instagram amplified the feat, with users hailing it as a game-changer for Africa’s digital divide. This move by Airtel Africa besides positioning it at the vanguard of satellite-mobile fusion, promises no subscriber will be left offline, regardless of geography.
