Microblogging Platform, Twitter has begun sharing advertising revenue with some of its verified content creators.

The company’s CEO, Elon Musk made the announcement in a tweet on Friday without providing further details.

“Starting today, Twitter will share ad revenue with creators for ads that appear in their reply threads. To be eligible, the account must be a subscriber to Twitter Blue Verified.”

The new revenue sharing program, already in effect, is only available to those who have subscribed to the platform’s $8 per month subscription service, Twitter Blue.

Such users will be paid for ads that appear in the threads beneath their tweets, though what percentage they will receive is unclear.

Those verified before the Tesla Tycoon’s takeover will not be eligible.

“Twitter’s legacy Blue Verified is unfortunately deeply corrupted, so will sunset in a few months,” he said in response to questions posed beneath his announcement.

The move could help Twitter compete with the likes of YouTube and TikTok, both of which have established systems for paying their content makers.

According to Forbes, YouTube gives creators a 55% cut on revenue, while TikTok offers its users a 50/50 split.

Musk formally acquired Twitter in October for $44 billion, and he has floated several ideas to increase revenue in the months since.

In addition to cutting nearly half the company’s staff — due to “a massive drop in revenue” — Musk has also mulled putting a paywall on the website.

Earlier this week, Twitter announced it will no longer support free access to the Twitter API starting February 9, but will instead make available a paid basic tier.
