In a shocking development that that is guaranteed to send ripples through the country’s advertising industry, the Advertisers Association of Nigeria (ADVAN) has announced its withdrawal from the Heads of Advertising Agencies Sectorial Group (HASG).

This decision, contained in a letter addressed to Dr. Femi Adelusi, Chairman of the HASG and signed by Ediri Ose-Ediale, Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of ADVAN and obtained by our news team was dated July 1, 2024.

The letter details ADVAN’s reasons for this drastic step: “Our decision stems from careful consideration and extensive deliberation by the ADVAN Executive Council and our association members.”

At the front burner of issues is what ADVAN describes as a “misalignment between the current actions of HASG and its stated objectives.” The letter explicitly states, “While our participation in HASG provided valuable opportunities to collaborate with dedicated industry professionals, we have come to the realization that there is a misalignment between the current actions of HASG and its stated objectives.

“The objectives of HASG, which we wholeheartedly support, include promoting investment in advertising services, fostering trust in the advertising sector, nurturing closer relationships among advertising sectorial associations, and engaging in discussions on regulations affecting the advertising practice in Nigeria,” the letter read.

The association claims that despite their efforts to engage constructively, their input has been largely ignored. “Despite our repeated engagement, our submissions and contributions have not received the acknowledgment and action they warrant. We firmly believe that a successful joint committee can only be attained through a commitment to transparency, accountability, and inclusion by all parties involved.”

Beyond leaving the HASG, ADVAN also stated it is withdrawing from “other ad-hoc industry committees where similar biases exist.” However, the association emphasizes its commitment to statutory obligations, stating, “We want to emphasize our unwavering commitment to fulfilling our obligations to participate in all statutory committees.”

Despite the strong stance, ADVAN has not closed the door on future cooperation. The letter concludes with an olive branch of sorts: “Our dedication to fostering a thriving marketing industry remains resolute, and we are receptive to transparent conversations and programs that are in line with this objective.”

This story is still developing, and our team will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.
