Ban On Beverages In Sachets Sparks Protest From Stakeholders, Labour Unions

0

Lagos streets erupted in chaos today as furious stakeholders in the alcoholic beverages industry, backed by powerhouse unions – NLC and TUC, stormed NAFDAC’s office, chanting and waving placards against the controversial sachet alcohol ban. Protesters belted solidarity songs and slammed signs reading “Stop destroying local manufacturers” and “5.5 million Nigerians cannot be pushed to the streets.”

This showdown stems from NAFDAC’s iron-fisted enforcement of a long-brewing ban on sachet and small PET alcohol packaging after years of warnings. Distillers and Blenders Association of Nigeria warns of a N2 trillion investment catastrophe and job Armageddon for over 5.5 million workers in the value chain – from factory floors to roadside hawkers – branding it a Renewed Hope Agenda gone wrong.

Public health allies cheer the crackdown, dismissing job-loss scare tactics as industry spin, insisting mechanized production won’t crater employment. NAFDAC on the other hand, led by Prof. Mojisola Adeyeye, stands firm: these pocket poisons, often packing 30-90% alcohol, fuel underage bingeing, road crashes, and health horrors like liver disease and addiction.

Everyday Nigerians are left debating if saving livers trumps saving livelihoods. Will this protest force a policy U-turn, or seal sachet alcohol’s fate? The stakes couldn’t be higher in Nigeria’s alcohol wars. Both warring sides are yet to address the press at the time of this report.
