OpenAI Shuts Down AI Video-generation Tool, Scraps $1 Billion Disney Deal

International artificial intelligence (AI) research organization, OpenAI, has shut down its Sora video-generation tool, this brings an abrupt end to a planned $1 billion partnership with The Walt Disney Company.

The move was confirmed recently in a post shared by the Sora team on its X handle, signaling the immediate discontinuation of the AI video project.

According to reports from Reuters, both Disney and OpenAI had been collaborating on a Sora-related initiative and were caught off guard by the shutdown, learning of the decision just 30 minutes after a meeting on Monday.

The development marks a significant strategic pivot for OpenAI, as the company moves away from video generation to concentrate on more commercially viable areas.

In a message to users, the Sora team acknowledged the impact of the shutdown on creators and communities built around the platform.

“We’re saying goodbye to the Sora app. To everyone who created with Sora, shared it, and built community around it: thank you. What you made with Sora mattered, and we know this news is disappointing.
We’ll share more soon, including timelines for the app and API and details on preserving your work.”

Disney, in response, said it respects the decision and remains open to future collaborations with OpenAI in other areas.

The shutdown reflects a broader restructuring within OpenAI, as it doubles down on building a more integrated AI ecosystem. The company is increasingly prioritising robotics, enterprise solutions, and the long-term development of Artificial General Intelligence (AGI).

As part of this shift, OpenAI is consolidating its tools into a unified “super-app” designed to serve both individual users and enterprise clients.

The internal shake-up has also brought leadership changes. Fidji Simo is transitioning to focus more on AGI deployment, while CEO Sam Altman has stepped back from direct oversight of safety and security teams.

The decision comes amid intensifying competition in the AI sector, particularly from rivals such as Anthropic, whose developer-focused tools are gaining traction with enterprise users.

Sora had also faced internal challenges, including high computational demands that strained infrastructure and limited OpenAI’s ability to scale other projects—factors that likely contributed to its discontinuation.
