FCCPC, LASCOPA Partner Against Consumer Exploitation

In a move to enhance consumer safeguards across Nigeria’s competitive markets, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) and the Lagos State Consumer Protection Agency (LASCOPA) have formalized a collaborative partnership through a Memorandum of Understanding.
The agreement which was signed in Abuja, targets persistent consumer grievances in key sectors like real estate, aviation, and transportation where Nigerians frequently encounter exploitation and unfair trading practices.
Tunji Bello, Executive Vice Chairman of the FCCPC, emphasized that effective consumer protection transcends federal jurisdiction. “Consumer issues are local in character, immediate in effect, and often require rapid intervention,” Bello noted, highlighting why state-level partnerships are indispensable.
The collaboration follows a 2023 Supreme Court ruling that classified urban and regional matters as state-controlled rather than federal prerogatives. This landmark decision provides the legal foundation for the FCCPC and LASCOPA’s joint action.
Lagos has already demonstrated commitment to consumer protection. LASCOPA has recovered over N40 million and $10,000 in customer funds from both domestic and international airlines, a testament to the agency’s enforcement capacity.
Afolabi Solebo, LASCOPA’s General Manager, expressed optimism about the enhanced powers the partnership brings. “With this collaboration and synergy, we will work assiduously to ensure that consumer rights are not only protected but that exploitative and unscrupulous trade practices cease,” he stated.
The MoU represents acknowledgment that as markets become more sophisticated, complaints will grow increasingly complex, often spanning multiple jurisdictions and sectors. By pooling resources, intelligence, and expertise, the agencies aim to deliver coordinated interventions and comprehensive consumer education.
For Nigerian consumers, particularly those navigating real estate transactions and airline booking, this partnership signals a more responsive, accountable regulatory environment.
