Amazon Founder, Jeff Bezos Nears Deal To Acquire 30% Stake In Liverpool FC

The founder of Amazon, Jeff Bezos, is reportedly close to joining a consortium seeking to acquire a roughly 30 percent stake in Liverpool Football Club, in a deal that could value the Premier League club at about $6 billion.
The proposed investment group is led by Amit Bhatia, a British Indian businessman and former shareholder of Championship club Queens Park Rangers, and includes Bezos and Facebook cofounder Eduardo Saverin. Reports from Forbes, Sky News and Al Jazeera indicate that an announcement could be made as soon as this week, although the timing could still shift.
Fenway Sports Group (FSG), owner of Liverpool FC since 2010, is expected to remain the club’s controlling shareholder if the transaction is completed. FSG confirmed last month that an investment consortium led, managed and represented by Bhatia had expressed interest in making a strategic minority investment in the club.
The proposed transaction would reportedly involve a stake of slightly more than 30 percent, with the investment valuing Liverpool at approximately £4.4 billion, or about $5.9 billion. That would make it one of the most valuable transactions involving a football club.
Bezos, whose fortune is estimated at more than $280 billion, has previously been linked with investments in major American sports franchises but has not held a prominent ownership position in football. His potential involvement marks a significant expansion of his interests in global sport.
Meanwhile, Saverin has previously been involved in football investment discussions. He was part of a consortium that unsuccessfully attempted to acquire Chelsea in 2022.
The potential deal comes at a period of transition for Liverpool. The club finished fifth in the Premier League last season and subsequently parted ways with manager Arne Slot. Former Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola has since taken charge, while long serving forward Mohamed Salah has also left the club.
Despite the recent changes, Liverpool remains one of the most successful clubs in English football, with 20 league titles and six European Cups.
For FSG, the transaction would represent another major financial milestone since its acquisition of Liverpool. The ownership group previously sold a minority interest to Dynasty Equity in 2023, in a deal that valued the club at more than $4.5 billion.
If completed, the proposed investment by the Bezos backed consortium would bring significant financial strength and high profile investors into Liverpool’s ownership structure, while allowing FSG to retain control of the club.
