APRA, IPRA Renew Longstanding Alliance To Expand Global Access For African PR Professionals

The African Public Relations Association (APRA) has renewed its partnership with the International Public Relations Association (IPRA). This alliance is aimed at giving African communication professionals wider access to global networks, professional development programmes, and international recognition.

In a notice to members signed by its Chief Administrative Officer, Veronica Abuede, APRA described the renewed engagement as part of its broader push to link African practitioners with leading international communication bodies while strengthening its position as the continent’s umbrella body for public relations practice.

APRA said its relationship with IPRA, which was founded in 1955, carries particular historical weight for the profession in Africa. According to the association, IPRA’s decision to hold its 20th anniversary conference in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1975 created the platform for representatives of 10 African countries to establish the Federation of African Public Relations Associations (FAPRA), the forerunner to APRA.

“Since that historic, consequential connection and subsequent affiliation with IPRA, APRA members have had the opportunity to extend their professional networks beyond Africa and engaged with communication professionals from around the world,” the association said.

APRA said the IPRA collaboration is one strand of a wider effort to revive ties with international professional bodies. Ahead of its 50th anniversary celebration in Mombasa, Kenya, in 2025, the association said it also engaged the International Communications Consultancy Association (ICCO) and the World Communication Forum Association (WCFA) to rebuild existing relationships. Its Executive Council also presented details of a new partnership with the Commission for Public Relations Education (CPRE) at a recent Annual General Meeting in Swakopmund, Namibia.

Under the renewed IPRA arrangement, interested APRA members can access international networks of PR professionals, thought leadership resources, webinars, and other development opportunities. Membership could also open doors to IPRA’s Golden World Awards, including judging roles, and to specialised groups working on emerging areas such as artificial intelligence and climate communication.

APRA stressed that the initiative is meant to complement, not replace, members’ engagement with the continental body. “As a member of APRA, we believe this presents an excellent opportunity to broaden your professional horizons while remaining firmly connected to Africa’s leading public relations community,” the association said.

“APRA is unequivocally, irrevocably and accountably committed to supporting its members to be world-class communication professionals,” Abuede said, adding that the partnerships would continue to create pathways for global knowledge sharing.
