Africa Must Build Brands, Instead Of Exporting Commodities – Dangote

Aliko Dangote, Africa’s richest man and CEO of Dangote Industries has unleashed a bold call to action: Africa must stop shipping raw materials abroad and start processing them at home. Speaking recently, he slammed the continent’s addiction to exporting unrefined resources like oil, minerals, and crops, while importing costly finished goods, draining billions in value.

This vicious cycle, Dangote warned, perpetuates poverty and stifles growth. “Africa can’t continue exporting raw materials,” he declared, spotlighting how nations forfeit jobs, technology transfer, and economic sovereignty by handing over riches for pennies, only to buy them back refined at premium prices. His own empire exemplifies the fix: Nigeria’s massive Dangote Refinery now churns out fuel locally, slashing import dependence and saving forex.

Dangote urged leaders to prioritize industrial policy, infrastructure, and skills training. His words resonate amid global supply chain shifts. For Africa, with 30% of global minerals yet under 5% processed locally, this is a wake-up call.

If heeded, it could spark a manufacturing boom, creating millions of jobs and rivaling Asia’s rise. Dangote is not just talking; his $20B refinery bet proves Africa might just be ready to redefine its destiny.
