Fake Toothpaste Alert: NAFDAC Warns Nigerians Over Counterfeit Colgate In Kaduna

The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has issued a public alert over a suspected, counterfeit Colgate-style toothpaste circulating in Kaduna State, urging consumers and retailers to check product labels and report suspicious items.
In a safety notice dated 25 March 2026 (Public Alert No. 022/2026), the agency disclosed that its Post Marketing Surveillance (PMS) Directorate received a complaint about an unregistered Colgate toothpaste in Kaduna and launched an investigation.
During an inspection of a retail outlet, PMS officers seized two suspect products branded as ”Coglaet ActivGel 100g” and “Coglaet Herbal 100g”, which mimic Colgate packaging but carry no valid NAFDAC registration number or batch markings. Both list Guangzhou YECAI Oral Cleaning Products Co., Ltd, China, as manufacturer and display manufacturing dates of August 2025 with expiry dates extending to August 2029. NAFDAC stresses that these items have not met Nigeria’s regulatory standards and may pose risks to oral and overall health.
The shop owner reportedly told investigators the products were purchased from a door-to-door sales representative and could not provide proof of purchase. NAFDAC has removed the items from the outlet and instructed its zonal and state coordinators to conduct surveillance and mop up operations where similar products appear.

The agency advises distributors, retailers and consumers to verify products’ authenticity by checking NAFDAC marks, batch numbers and expiry dates, and to report suspected counterfeit or substandard goods to the nearest NAFDAC office, via the toll-free line 0800-162-3322 or by email at sf.alert@nafdac.gov.ng.
