One of Nigeria’s foremost media agency, Carat Nigeria, has clinched the multi-million-naira media business of global smartphone brand, Oppo, in Nigeria.

The Carat agency in Nigeria, a subsidiary of MediaFuseDentsu Aegis emerged winners of the account after a very rigorous pitching process that held February last year and was repeated again in February this year.

Recall, the Oppo media business since February last year has been under the portfolio of MediaReachOMD before another pitch was called barely 12 months later. The Oppo account is a business that goes beyond media activations and digital to broad experientials and promotions, brand association, influencer marketing and among others,

When Brand Communicator reached out to Igwe Okeke, Managing Director of Carat Nigeria on the implication of the win for the agency, he had this to say: “For us, winning the Oppo account is a big one, especially in the first quarter of the year where many agencies struggle. For us, this is setting the pace for the many things we intend to do this year.”

Igwe went on to explain that the win is an indication that the agency is not doing badly in the very competitive media independence space. He adds, “our strides in the marketplace, the noticeable results of the brands we handle out there, and our pedigree all came to play with an excellent pitch to give us this win. We pitched against big agencies including the incumbent one handling the account to win.

Earlier in the year, Carat Nigeria was included in the exclusive list of ‘Brands and Agencies to Watch in 2020: How they Shaped 2019,’ published by Nigeria’s foremost most consistent brands, marketing and corporate communications journal, Brand Communicator.

Also, in the latest release of the Research Company Evaluating the Media Agency Industry, RECMA’s bi-annual Global Network Diagnostics report, Carat was once again, 2019, recognised as the number one global media agency network of the year. The report evaluates media agencies’ strengths and weaknesses via 18 criteria across 670 media agencies in 46 countries including New Business Activity, Competitiveness in pitches, Momentum, Specialist Resources and Client Profile.

Interestingly, the global mobile phone brand, Oppo has been enjoying a meteoric rise to the top in the Nigerian smartphone industry since it entered the market in the tail of April, last year. In just 5 months, the brand has been able to physically spread to 24 out of the 36 states in Nigeria, competing favourably with other established high-end phones in the Nigerian market.

It came as no surprise therefore that the Association of Telecom Companies of Nigeria (ATCON) in collaboration with Instinct Wave at the 3rd Nigeria Tech Innovation & Telecom Awards (NTITA) recognized the global smartphone brand as the Emerging Smartphone Brand of the Year for 2019.
