Pepsi Disembaa No Dulling: Putting The Beats In Afrobeats

0

Over 30 mega shows! Different cities, mega A-list star artistes, one drink…Pepsi! That is all it took to make December the bomb! It sounds easy but it’s a lot more than that! When you think Detty December, you think Africa, you think Naija…. and you can’t just help but also think of the one drink that will always be at the centre of it all – Pepsi!

Today, Pepsi’s support of live shows is so definitive that Pepsi’s event calendar for December is essentially the guide to enjoying Lagos during the festive season. More than any single brand, Pepsi has become synonymous with live shows and late December nights. In fact, in Nigeria, among young people and concert-goers, the last month of the year has come to be known as Disembaa – 2 years after Pepsi’s 2017 “Detty Disembaa campaign painted the town red and blue and changed the face of Nigeria’s concert season.

More than any other brand, Pepsi has become synonymous with Nigeria’s famous “Detty December” celebrations. And why not December? The blast of the fireworks that heralded the first minute in January 2023 came with a truckload of drama for Nigerians. Our dear fatherland witnessed things that had citizens in a perpetual state of “Wetin’ be this?” a year that was both as emotionally draining for many as it was fulfilling for others…and a mixed bag of fortunes for others.

Over the last decade and counting, Brand Pepsi has been at the heart of Naija pop culture. Consistently delivering on its promise of amazing taste, and unforgettable experiences and connecting consumers with some of Naija’s biggest stars in the music industry

We are the heartbeat of music in Naija and when it comes to December, the brand, Pepsi has strategically owned this space by activating its music engagement pillar through partnerships with some Strategic music platforms. It’s a no-brainer… Pepsi has it on lock

Whichever category you belong to, the timing could not have been any better. 2023 had kicked off with now erstwhile central bank governor Godwin Emefiele’s disastrous naira redesign policy, which saw nearly the entire cash supply sucked from circulation. For months, ATMs sat empty as Nigerians endured interminable queues just to withdraw their own money.

Nigerians desperately hoped for better leadership going to the polls in February. Depending on the side of the political or ‘apolitical’ divide or affiliation, that election will stand as one of the most emotionally, mentally, and psychologically draining for Nigerians. Our dear President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ultimately prevailed in what has been variously described as a divisive vote, leaving the opposition convinced Nigeria’s democracy was broken.

Tinubu quickly removed fuel subsidies after taking office, causing prices to triple practically overnight. Inflation soared, and Nigerians’ stagnant wages bought less and less. Morale plunged further as corporate titans like GSK, P&G, and Unilever exited Nigeria, citing unfavorable business conditions and taking beloved brands with them.

Meanwhile, professionals and students embarked on “japa” – mass emigration abroad to more stable countries. While parents bid tearful goodbyes to children starting new lives overseas, lovers bid farewell to their partners, some uncertain about the fate of their relationship; friends and siblings are not left out.

All these are besides the hustle and bustle of daily life for Nigerians as well as the negative stories of kidnapping, armed banditry, and adverse economic measures among all the negatives Nigerians endured in 2023. By December, Nigerians were exhausted and desperate for fun!

And, Pepsi Naija, the brand that speaks the very distinct language of Nigerians, that brand whose brand DNA has fun, pizzazz, and the very intrinsic taste and cola, was ready to come up with just the right thing Nigerians needed – Pepsi No Dulling Disembaa, #Pepsinodullingdisembaa or Pepsis DND for short! With its signature blue, red, and white logo plastered across venues nationwide, Pepsi made it clear no other brand could match its scale and ambition for Detty December. 12 mega-concerts is an unprecedented undertaking. For the brand, the assignment was clear – Nigerians needed to exhale, laugh, link up with old friends, and sway to anthemic afrobeats and a fizzy dose of euphoria that only Pepsi can provide. 2023 tested Nigeria to its limits, but Detty December brought catharsis. And Pepsi can rightly toast itself as the nation’s preeminent provider of fizzy relief from a turbulent year.

A Culture of Putting the Beat In AfroBeat

Today, Pepsi’s support of live shows is so definitive that Pepsi’s event calendar for December is essentially the guide to enjoying Lagos during the festive season. One of the vehicles it has used in effectively doing this is through music – Afrobeat. It is no surprise that it has come to be known as the brand that is putting the beat in Afrobeat!

Arguably no live show goes as far as defining Pepsi’s strategic contribution quite like the Lynxxx and Friends Campus Tour as far back as 2011, to its support of DJs culminating in 2018’s Lituation Parties to the Disembaa No Dulling mega parties in 2023. In 2011, riding on the strength of pop hits like “Change Your Parade” and “Alabukun”, Lynxxx set out to thrill fans across the country through his aptly-named university tour. A sponsor that could travel the country, even on the Northern leg, and connect with the fans was the platform Lynxxx needed. Pepsi signed on and 8 years later, the rest is pop culture history. That university tour, as well as the partnership between Lynxxx and Pepsi, created a template for artists that are still followed to this date.

Any fan will tell you that the crowning moment of any December is seeing their favourite artist, emerging to a loud ovation, at their headline event. Yet long before Eko Hotels became the scene of December concerts, Pepsi single-handedly pushed the country’s biggest stars through some of the most profitable endorsements in African history.

At a time when few Nigerian stars were genuinely bankable, Pepsi anointed Afropop’s golden boy, Wizkid, and its leading woman, Tiwa Savage, right as they were on the cusp of crossing over, with an endorsement that was impressively valued. Beyond simply endorsing these artists with the goodwill of a time-tested brand that’s recognised and loved by millions across the world, these endorsements have become one of the most important sources of income in a very disjointed marketplace.

More endorsements have followed since, and each announcement has seemingly elevated the artist firmly into the upper echelon. The announcement of Davido secured the Giant 3 for the brand shortly after. Tekno was next to join the ranks in 2017. DJ Spinall, DJ Xclusive, DJ Obi, and DJ Cuppy followed in 2018. This year, as one would expect of a brand with its finger on the Afrobeats’ pulse, Pepsi signaled the change of guard by announcing Burna Boy and Teni, the two biggest stars of 2018, as its newest brand ambassadors.

The same year, Pepsi went further, by embracing the men and women who keep our bodies moving and our playlists updated – the DJs. Despite their immense contribution to pollinating audiences, DJs had been relegated to the status of bit-part players in Nigerian music for years. In many ways, Pepsi’s DJ campaign was the first to remedy that. In the space of a few weeks, the soft drink giant announced it had signed four of Nigeria’s top DJs – DJ Xclusive, DJ Cuppy, DJ Spinall, and DJ Obi. Weeks later, the CSD giant shut down Lagos for the party of the year: four DJs, hundreds of hits, a great ambiance, and a ‘Lituation’, as the party was tagged.

For Nigerian fans, one of the biggest hallmarks of 2018 was a campaign that focused on capturing Nigerians’ immense national spirit – aptly tagged ‘Naija All The Way’. The vehicle? A star-studded TV ad that united some of the country’s biggest personalities – Jay-Jay Okocha, Wizkid, Davido, DJ Cuppy, Tiwa Savage, Alex Iwobi, Victor Moses, Ahmed Musa, DJ Spinall, DJ Xclusive – and that could well go down as a moment of its own.

Also customary for the brand, in 2019, Pepsi Nigeria announced plans to lift the spirit of Nigerians for the forthcoming holiday, via the ‘We Got Taste’ campaign. This concept was to host the best shows, party experiences, and concerts this Christmas like Pepsi Rhythm Unplugged, and Livespot X Festival amongst many others.

According to the Marketing Manager Of Seven-Up Bottling Company, Mr. Segun Ogunleye at a brief meeting, “There is a long line of events that will exhibit the true character of the taste that Pepsi stands for, through the intrinsic taste of the pop soda, the dynamic brand ambassadors, and the array of concerts planned out. All these have been put together to give Nigerians the ultimate taste experience for December.’

That December also featured Dj Cuppy’s  ‘Cactus at the Roof party’, Dj Xclusive’s ‘All White Party’, and Dj Spinall’s  ‘Party of Your Dreams’ which happen to be among the most celebrated raves in Nigeria and Africa. Indeed, the events were as tasteful as advertised. It had the Pepsi Rhythm Unplugged return for its 13th edition, with the Pepsi brand as its lead sponsor. But as Nigerian music continues to become a veritable global commodity, Pepsi has taken the important jump to connect local audiences with the world’s biggest artists. That year, after enjoying one of the biggest runs in hip-hop history, social media phenomenon, Cardi B performed in Lagos for the first time at the Livespot X Festival, courtesy of Pepsi. Other events include Burna Boy’s “Burna Boy in Concert”, Megan Thee Stallion’s debut appearance in Lagos, Teni’s “The Billionaire Experience”, Pepsi’s Wizkid Live concert, DJ Cuppy’s “Cactus at the Roof Party”, DJ Xclusive’s “All White Party” and DJ Spinall’s “Party Of Your Dreams”.

Pepsi will go on to sponsor Rhythm Unplugged up until December 2022 except for 2020 where it teamed up with Africa Magic to bring the party to the living rooms of Nigerians that have been kept indoors by the ravaging Corona Virus pandemic with its innovative Pepsi Africa Magic Turn Up Parties. In 2023, it decided to aim higher to come out with the mother of all concerts…only this time, bigger in scale, scope, and much more than any brand has ever sponsored in the history of Afrobeats and concerts in Nigeria!
