In a historic and record-breaking accomplishment, KIBI Quazi, the first indigenous animated film series raked in N8.5 million on its first day at the cinema box office.

KIBI Quazi, produced by Micromedia Animated Studio premiered on May 27, 2024, to celebrate Children’s Day at different cinemas across Nigeria.

As promised by Shileola Ibironke, the producer of KIBI Quazi, the premiere which was the first of its kind, was garnished with great fun, and children found the movies really unforgettable as they trooped in their numbers, full of excitement, to the cinemas in different commercial cities including Lagos, Ibadan, Ilorin, Enugu, Port-Harcourt, Kano and Abuja to celebrate their day in style.

KIBI Quazi premiere, which was sponsored by Maltina was shown in the following cinema houses across Nigeria: Filmhouse Palms, Oniru, Filmhouse Circle Mall, Lekki Peninsula, Filmhouse – Ikota, Genesis Cinemas, Maryland, Silverbird Cinemas, ICM, Ozone Cinemas, Yaba, Heritage Cinemas Abule-Egba and DreamPark, Ikorodu.

Others are Filmworld, Igando, Kada Cinemas Benin Filmhouse, Benin, Viva Cinemas, Ibadan, Viva Cinemas, Enugu, Viva Cinemas, Ilorin, Box Office Cinemas, P/Harcourt, Filmhouse P/Harcourt, Platinum Cinemas, Jos and Platinum Cinemas, Kano.

Commenting on the acceptability of the new animation film, Ibironke said that she is excited that the Nigerian market and children love and accept animation films. She further noted that animated content with African-oriented themes could be used as a tool in moulding the country’s next generations positively. Her words, “Let’s make some noise about this great accomplishment”.

She said that her reason for advocating for increased local content was that many African children watch a lot of foreign animated content, and are not exposed to African-themed narratives.

Her words, “The demography of children aged 0-15yrs are glued to animated content. They have built their world around foreign superheroes, foreign multi-dimensional games, and the virtual world (metaverse).

They haven’t been provided with African orientation regarding Wisdom, Purpose, Empathy, Success, Culture, Social and Geographical Landscape.

“It’s highly imperative that we begin to churn out more African-themed narratives that would mould the next generation. The future of content for Generation Alpha / GenZ is in Animated Formats.”

KIBI Quazi is a 2D animation centred around a teenage boy, Oluwakibi, who, through his inquisitiveness discovers a mask that transforms him into an ancient Yoruba warrior- GBOGAN- and together they undertake super-heroic acts by saving people, the environment, as well as curtailing villains.

Recall that KIBI QUAZI was officially selected as the opening film for the prestigious Annecy Festival at the official Animation pitch ceremony held on May 16, 2024. The Annecy Festival is set to take place in France in June.
