Telecommunication firm, Globacom has commenced a network upgrade nationwide aimed at improving its customers’ experiences. This is part of the conditions spelt out by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) for approving a 50 per cent end user tariff adjustment of telecom services.

In a statement, the company stressed the need to enhance its customers’ experiences.

The firm said the network upgrade has witnessed the deployment of new base stations to serve new areas and densification to enhance coverage in areas with increasing population.

Auchi-Okene, Benin-Ekpoma, Lafia-Akwanga, Minna-Abuja, and Funtua-Gusau were highlighted as part of the places where the relocation of its fibre infrastructure is going to take place.

It attributed the relocation to the construction of roads along these areas and vandalisation, adding that it has impacted the network quality in those areas.

“We decided, at a huge cost, to relocate the fibres, many of which had been vandalized in several places by uncoordinated road construction activities, in order to bring best-in-class services to customers.

“The telco is nonetheless concerned that intentional sabotage of network equipment continues to occur, even though telecoms architecture has been designated as important national infrastructure. This calls for further effort to stop it in its tracks.

“Given that Glo is on the verge of finishing the rollout of hundreds of new sites nationwide, the exercises bode well for Glo subscribers,” the statement reads.

The firm stressed that thousands of 4G LTE stations have been set up in strategic cities nationwide this year, adding that plan are underway to increase the stations by hundreds.

“Together with this, there has been a significant increase in backhaul capacity via fibre and microwave, as well as a carefully thought-out enhancement to the core network that is operating without a hitch.

“The business promised that continued efforts will result in improved network quality, more coverage, and improved service delivery. Additionally, customers can expect faster data speeds and improved overall network performance,” the statement reads.

In addition to its upgrading, the firm also hinted that plans are underway to install more than a thousand additional sites in 2025.

“In order to increase reliability and offer a more reliable service delivery, the company is also concentrating on connecting fibre to several of its hub sites.

“By expanding hybrid power and depending more on battery power rather than generators at its locations across the country, Globacom is also aiming to reduce carbon emissions from its operations. This also has a high investment cost,” the statement reads.
