Abuja Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Hon. Justice Kudirat Kekere-Ekun has hailed the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) as indispensable to Nigeria’s economic integrity, emphasizing its frontline role in shielding consumers and fostering competition.

Delivering the keynote at the opening of a three-day Competition and Consumer Protection Law Conference at the National Judicial Institute (NJI) in Abuja on March 10, 2026, the CJN spotlighted FCCPC’s statutory mandate under the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Act (FCCPA) 2018. “As the statutory authority responsible for enforcing competition and consumer protection laws, the Commission plays a vital role in safeguarding the integrity of the marketplace,” she declared.

Justice Kekere-Ekun underscored FCCPC’s pivotal position in Nigeria’s regulatory framework, tasked with curbing anticompetitive practices, scrutinizing mergers, and bolstering consumer rights amid evolving digital markets and corporate complexities. She noted the surge in related litigation, urging deeper judiciary-FCCPC collaboration for robust enforcement and interpretation of the FCCPA.

The CJN highlighted how FCCPC promotes fair business across sectors, preventing market dominance abuse and ensuring consumer welfare, a bulwark against economic distortions. “Competition and consumer protection law has rapidly evolved into one of the most dynamic fields,” she added, calling for judicial agility in addressing fintech disputes and regulatory challenges.

Her remarks reinforce FCCPC’s centrality as Nigeria navigates globalization and innovation. With courts poised to test these laws, sustained partnerships promise a level playing field for brands and citizens alike.
