WhatsApp To Offer Number-Free Chats, Starts Username Reservations

WhatsApp has begun letting users reserve usernames as it prepares for a major privacy update that will allow people to chat without sharing their phone numbers. The feature is rolling out gradually, and users will get a notification when it becomes available in their country.

According to WhatsApp, the reservation tool is meant to help users secure a preferred handle before the full username system launches. Users can reserve a username through the app’s settings, under Settings > Account > Username. WhatsApp says the username will become active when the feature is fully launched in the user’s region.

The new feature is part of a wider move by Meta-owned WhatsApp to reduce dependence on phone numbers for communication on the platform. However, WhatsApp still requires a phone number to create an account, even though the username feature will let people share their profiles more privately later on. TechCrunch reported that usernames are being reserved first to avoid duplication across WhatsApp’s huge user base.

The company is also setting aside usernames for celebrities, organizations and businesses that want to keep their brand identity consistent across Meta platforms. WhatsApp said businesses and creators may be able to claim the same usernames they already use on Instagram or Facebook. The platform also plans to let users set a username key, which others will need to know before they can message them.

The move has been described as a big privacy shift because it allows users to interact without exposing their phone numbers to strangers. WhatsApp also said usernames will not be searchable in the app, meaning people will need the exact username to contact someone. Users will be able to change or turn off the feature later if they choose.

The rollout marks one of WhatsApp’s biggest identity changes in years, especially for people, small businesses and creators who prefer not to share personal numbers publicly.
