Google Unveils Free Offline AI, Digital Skills Training Platform For Nigerians

Google has introduced a free digital learning platform that will enable Nigerians and other Africans to acquire artificial intelligence (AI) and other in-demand digital skills without requiring constant internet access.

The initiative, which forms part of the company’s ambition to train three million people across Africa by 2030, is designed to make digital education more accessible, particularly for individuals facing high internet costs and limited connectivity.

The announcement was contained in a statement issued last Monday by Google’s Communications and Public Relations Manager for West Africa, Taiwo Kola-Ogunlade.

Google’s Managing Director for Africa, Alex Okosi, said the initiative was aimed at equipping more Africans with the knowledge and technical capabilities needed to develop, adopt and innovate with emerging AI technologies.

Known as Skilling Africa with Google, the programme targets 250,000 graduates by the end of 2026 and brings together more than 15 training programmes covering artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, cloud computing, data analytics, digital marketing and small business development.

According to Okosi, the platform addresses some of the major barriers preventing Africans from accessing digital education, particularly the cost of mobile data and unreliable internet connectivity.

He explained that users could download learning materials while connected to Wi-Fi and access them later without an active internet connection or additional mobile data expenses.

“Users can download lessons through Wi-Fi and subsequently access the learning materials offline without incurring additional mobile data costs,” he said.

The platform is also designed to work on entry-level smartphones and laptops, eliminating the need for users to download a separate application before accessing the training materials.

Okosi noted that Africa had a significant opportunity to influence the future of artificial intelligence but stressed that realising this potential would require a larger pool of people equipped with the skills to build, use and innovate with the technology.

He added that the new initiative builds on Google’s previous digital skills development programmes, which have collectively trained more than seven million young Africans in foundational digital skills.

The Skilling Africa with Google platform brings together more than 15 existing training programmes into a central learning hub, offering different learning pathways for students, job seekers, entrepreneurs and technology professionals.

Among the available programmes is Google’s Hustle Academy, which provides business training and practical resources to help small business owners grow and develop their enterprises.

The platform also features Google Career Certificates, which provide professional training in areas such as data analytics, IT support and cybersecurity.

In addition, Google Cloud Skills programmes are available for developers and other technology professionals seeking to strengthen their technical expertise and advance their careers.

Another feature of the platform is SCOUT, an AI-powered study companion designed to support learners throughout their training. The tool helps users understand unfamiliar concepts, ask questions and organise their study schedules.

Beyond providing access to training materials, the platform also allows learners to monitor their progress and earn verifiable digital badges upon completing courses.

These credentials can be presented to prospective employers or clients as evidence of the skills and knowledge acquired through the programmes.

By bringing together AI education, professional certification and business development resources in an offline-accessible learning environment, Google is seeking to widen participation in Africa’s growing digital economy.

The initiative is expected to provide more Africans, particularly young people and aspiring technology professionals, with opportunities to develop relevant skills and position themselves for emerging opportunities in the digital and AI-driven economy.
