Meta’s Threads Hits 500 Million Monthly Users, Introduces New Community Features

Meta has announced that its social media platform, Threads, has surpassed 500 million monthly active users, marking a significant milestone in the app’s growth.

The company, which made the announcement recently, said the achievement reflects increasing demand for a public platform focused on conversation and community engagement.

“Today we’re announcing that Threads has reached 500 million monthly active users, a milestone that reflects people’s desire for a public space built around conversation,” Meta said.

According to the company, much of Threads’ growth has been driven by community groups of users who connect around shared interests such as books, basketball, parenting, music, and other topics.

To mark the milestone, Meta is expanding its Communities feature, which is now graduating from beta and receiving several new tools designed to strengthen engagement and interaction among users.

“Those communities built Threads into what it is and now, we’re adding new tools to help them become even more meaningful and dynamic,” the company stated.

Among the updates is the introduction of a new Communities Hub, which will place communities in the main navigation menu beside the feed, making it easier for users to discover and switch between them.

“We’re making it easier to find and switch between communities by adding them to the main menu to the left of your feed,” Meta said.

The company is also introducing distinct visual icons for communities, making them easier to identify across the platform. In addition, a new Community Progress feature will show users when a topic is close to becoming a community and provide guidance on how they can help it reach that status.

Meta said it will expand its Community Champion programme, recognising more active contributors across communities. The company is also launching Local Communities, beginning with native-language tags in Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan.

Other enhancements include expanding Live Chats to more communities in the coming weeks, along with new co-hosting capabilities and the ability for users to quote specific moments from live chats directly to their feeds.

The company is also introducing new tools that give users greater control over the content they see. Building on the “Dear Algo” feature launched earlier this year, which allows users to tell the Threads algorithm what they would like to see more or less of, Meta is rolling out a complementary feature called “Your Algo.”

The new feature enables users to privately request more or less content on specific topics for one, three, or seven-day periods. These preferences are visible only to the user and can be managed alongside Dear Algo through a unified control hub.

Your Algo is initially being rolled out in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom, Australia, and New Zealand.

Meta said the latest updates are part of its broader effort to improve Threads through user feedback and strengthen its position as a destination for community-driven conversations.
