ARCON Expands Special Recognition Awards Beyond Compliance

The Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) has expanded the scope of its Special Recognition Awards to recognise a wider range of contributions to Nigeria’s advertising and marketing communications industry.

The expanded framework for the 2026 edition was presented by Mr. Yinka Adebayo, Chairman, Organising Committee, ASTRA on Monday, August 31, at a media briefing attended by industry stakeholders and members of the media.

Speaking at the event, Director-General of ARCON, Dr Olalekan Fadolapo, said the awards were initially conceived as a Compliance Award to recognise brands that had demonstrated commitment to complying with advertising standards.

Fadolapo, however, said the changing realities of the advertising ecosystem made it necessary to broaden the scope of the awards.

He said, “Award is extremely important because we need to continuously recognise these people that have done well in all ramifications.”

According to him, compliance remains an important element of regulatory oversight, but the advertising ecosystem has continued to expand, with several individuals and organisations making significant contributions to its development.

He said the committee was therefore asked to look beyond compliance and identify “other areas of revenues” as well as individuals who had contributed concretely to the growth of the ecosystem.

Fadolapo said the expanded awards would provide an opportunity to recognise these contributions while encouraging more practitioners and organisations to improve their standards and performance.

Presenting the 2026 award framework, Chairman of the ASRA 2026 Organising Committee, Yinka Adebayo, said the awards had been structured around four broad areas: Advertising Compliance Awards, Public Sector Recognition Awards, Private Sector Recognition Awards and Individual Recognition Awards.

The Advertising Compliance Awards will cover 16 sectors, including food, hospitality, alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, aviation and automobile, fintech, banking and insurance, telecommunications, education, real estate, healthcare, home and personal care, and entertainment.

Unlike conventional award entries, the compliance category will be determined using advertising materials submitted to ARCON in 2024 and 2025.

For each sector, the three brands with the highest number of eligible submissions during the period will be shortlisted.

The shortlisted brands will subsequently undergo independent verification, with auditors examining their submission records before the approved scoring system is applied.

The scoring model will consider both submission volume and compliance performance. Category volume carries a 100 per cent weighting, while violations will attract a 10 per cent penalty rate.

The final score will be determined by a brand’s share of total submissions in its category, adjusted according to its violation query rate. The brand with the highest final compliance score will emerge as the winner.

The organisers said the approach is intended to encourage brands to consistently participate in the regulatory vetting process while providing a measurable benchmark for responsible advertising practice.

Beyond compliance, the 2026 framework introduces dedicated categories for public sector communication.

These include Excellence in Grassroots Engagement & Community Mobilisation, Excellence in Stakeholder Engagement for Public Service Delivery, Voice of the People Public Engagement, Social Impact Communication Excellence, Culture & Heritage Promotion Special Recognition and Public Information Campaign of the Year.

Other categories are Excellence in Public Sector Media Communication, Excellence in Responsible Influencer Engagement and Best Digital Public Communication Initiative.

Entries in the public sector categories will go through a five-stage process beginning with nominations on the ASRA portal.

This will be followed by eligibility screening, technical assessment by an independent panel, public voting for designated categories and final Jury review and ratification.

The private sector categories will recognise brands in areas including SME Engagement & Consumer Mobilisation, Customer Response Management, Sponsorship Marketing, CSR & Social Impact Communication, Brand Reinvention & Innovation, Creative Use of Culture in Communication and Pride in Origin.

The categories extend recognition beyond advertising campaigns to include customer engagement, sponsorship, social impact, innovation and the use of culture in brand communication.

Individual recognition will also form a major part of the 2026 awards.

The Sectoral Frontrunner Awards will recognise individuals who have played pioneering roles in the development of different sectors of the industry, including the Media Independent Practitioners Association of Nigeria (MIPAN), Experiential Marketers Association of Nigeria (EXMAN), Outdoor Advertising Agencies of Nigeria (OAAN) and Association of Advertising Agencies of Nigeria (AAAN).

The framework also provides for posthumous recognition of deserving industry pioneers.

The Industry Lifetime Contribution Awards will recognise professionals who have made sustained contributions to the growth, regulation, professionalism and development of Nigeria’s marketing communications industry.

The Distinguished Service Recognition Award will similarly recognise individuals for sustained service to the development of the industry.

The expanded approach received support from sectoral leaders at the briefing.

President of the Experiential Marketers Association of Nigeria (EXMAN), Tolulope Medebem, said recognition was important because it reinforces standards, rewards commitment and reminds practitioners of the values and behaviours the industry needs to see more of.

Medebem said the advertising industry was continuing to evolve in response to technology, changing consumer behaviour, new platforms and increasing demands for accountability.

She said a thriving industry must be built not only through creativity and innovation but also through collaboration, responsible practice and a shared commitment to excellence.

She commended ARCON for creating a platform that recognises both individuals and institutions whose contributions have helped move the industry forward.

Also speaking, President of the Media Independent Practitioners Association of Nigeria (MIPAN), Brenda Nwagwu, said recognition encourages excellence and professionalism while reminding practitioners of their responsibility to continually raise industry standards.

Nwagwu said MIPAN remained committed to working with ARCON and other stakeholders to build a stronger, more ethical, innovative and sustainable advertising ecosystem in Nigeria.

The President of the Outdoor Advertising Association of Nigeria (OAAN), Dr Sola Akinsiku, also expressed support for the initiative.

Akinsiku said the awards would promote professionalism, standards and ethics by rewarding those who had performed strongly within the industry.

He added that recognising outstanding contributions could serve as a catalyst for more quality productions, executions and deliverables across the advertising ecosystem.

Meanwhile, the organisers have announced the timeline for the 2026 awards.

Nominations opened on Monday, August 31 and will close on Sunday, September 13.

Supporting evidence will be submitted between September 14 and September 19, while voting will run from September 20 to September 27.

The Jury will sit between September 28 and October 2 to select and ratify the winners.

The organisers have also announced five sponsorship investment levels, with limited slots available to interested partners.
