Beyond The Brief: Paul Adewumi Joins Publicis West Africa To Shape The Next Era Of Influence Within CWAR

Publicis West Africa has appointed marketing influencer and creator-economy expert, Paul Adewumi, as its Regional Influencer Lead for Central and West Africa.

In his new role, Adewumi will lead the development and growth of the agency’s influencer marketing practice across the region, focusing on strengthening its approach to creator partnerships and influencer-led campaigns.

The appointment comes as Africa’s creator economy evolves beyond traditional, campaign-driven influencer marketing into a more strategic ecosystem where creators increasingly serve as media owners, community builders, cultural commentators, and entrepreneurs.

According to Publicis West Africa, the changing nature of the creator economy requires brands and agencies to look beyond conventional measures such as follower counts and engagement rates, as creators increasingly play a significant role in shaping conversations, building communities and influencing how audiences discover and engage with brands.

His mandate goes beyond campaign execution. It includes developing regional frameworks and standards, strengthening creator relationships, advising clients on influencer strategy, developing talent within the practice, and connecting creator marketing more effectively with the wider communications ecosystem.

At the heart of this is a fundamental shift: from transaction to relationship. The question for brands is increasingly less about “How many people can this creator reach?” and more about “What influence does this creator have, with whom, and what can that influence achieve?”

That requires a different relationship between brands, agencies and creators. Creators should not only enter the conversation when a brand has a brief and a budget. The strongest creator ecosystems will increasingly be built around relationships, not transactions.

Long-term partnerships can create greater consistency, stronger creative work, more efficient commercial relationships and deeper understanding between brands and creators.

The opportunity, therefore, is to build regional consistency without losing local intelligence.

That will require better creator intelligence, stronger talent assessment, more sophisticated measurement, improved commercial practices and knowledge sharing across markets.

For Adewumi, the ambition is ultimately to help build a creator practice, not simply a creator team.

As Publicis West Africa strengthens its capability across Central and West Africa, the broader opportunity is to help move the industry from transactions to partnerships, from reach to influence, and from campaigns to communities.

The next chapter of Africa’s creator economy may not be about making influencer marketing bigger. It may be about making it better.
