BBNaija S11 Task5: Colgate Champions Oral Hygiene With ‘24-Hour Protection’ Task

For decades, Colgate, under Colgate-Palmolive Tolaram, has positioned oral hygiene at the centre of its mission to help people care for their teeth and maintain healthier, more confident smiles. That commitment was brought into sharp focus on the Big Brother Naija Season 11 stage as the brand challenged housemates to think beyond entertainment and test how much they know about oral care.
The fifth sponsored brand task of the season, tagged “24-Hour Protection,” turned the BBNaija house into a competitive oral-health classroom, combining education, entertainment and brand engagement in a series of activities designed to test the contestants’ knowledge of Colgate, speed, intelligence, teamwork and strength.
The activation comes against the backdrop of a significant global oral-health challenge. The World Health Organisation estimates that oral diseases affect about 3.7 billion people worldwide, while untreated dental caries remains the most common health condition globally. WHO also recommends twice-daily brushing with fluoride toothpaste as a key measure for preventing tooth decay.
Against this reality, Colgate’s decision to use a high-visibility platform such as Big Brother Naija to communicate oral-health messages demonstrates how consumer education can be woven into popular entertainment.
The 24-Hour Protection task reinforced the brand’s central promise of helping consumers maintain continuous protection against cavities and other oral-health concerns, while translating that message into an experience that was both competitive and engaging.
For the task, the housemates were divided into four teams: Team Whiter Smile, Team Cavity Protection, Team Colgate Charcoal and Team Yanga Smile. The teams competed in a series of activities that required a combination of mental agility, product knowledge, physical coordination and presentation skills.
The competition included oral-health trivia, a casting-of-the-die game, timed challenges and team presentations. Questions and activities tested the housemates’ understanding of dental health, plaque prevention, cavity protection and Colgate’s product benefits, making the task as much about learning as it was about winning.
At the centre of the activation was Colgate’s ability to use its different product propositions to connect oral-health benefits with everyday consumer needs. The spotlight on Colgate Charcoal, for instance, provided an opportunity to reinforce conversations around whitening and stain removal, while the wider task highlighted the brand’s cavity-protection proposition.
Colgate has previously used Big Brother Naija to create immersive consumer experiences around oral hygiene. Its sponsorship activities have included prominent in-house branding, provision of toothpaste for housemates and tasks built around oral-care messages, generating engagement among both contestants and viewers.
This latest activation similarly blurred the line between brand communication and entertainment. Rather than simply presenting a product message, Colgate placed the housemates inside the message, requiring them to demonstrate what they knew and compete around the very issues the brand seeks to address.
The approach also resonated with the wider viewing audience, as fans followed the competition, rooted for their preferred housemates and reacted to the performances across social media. The excitement surrounding Team Colgate Charcoal, particularly, grew as the team of Cassi, Keivo, Bells, Yusuf and Nomy delivered a winning performance.
At the end of the task, Team Colgate Charcoal emerged as the overall winner, securing bragging rights after outperforming the other teams across the various challenges.
Beyond the competition, the Colgate 24-Hour Protection task demonstrated the growing role of experiential marketing in connecting brands with younger Nigerian audiences. By combining product education, entertainment and competition, Colgate was able to communicate an important everyday message: oral care should not be treated as an occasional routine, but as a consistent part of personal wellbeing.
For a brand whose purpose is closely tied to improving oral health, the BBNaija platform offered Colgate an opportunity to turn that promise into an engaging experience, while reminding millions of viewers that a healthy smile begins with everyday protection.
