NCC Introduces Device Checker To Help Nigerians Avoid Fake Phones

The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) has introduced a Device Checker service that allows consumers to verify communications devices before purchase, as part of efforts to curb counterfeit and non-compliant devices on Nigerian mobile networks.
The service enables consumers to check a device’s approval and verification status by dialling *315# and following the prompts or visiting the Commission’s official portal at www.ncc.gov.ng/devicechecker.
According to the NCC, consumers should verify devices before making payment, particularly when purchasing second-hand phones or devices imported from abroad.
The service forms part of the Commission’s enhanced Type Approval Compliance framework, which took effect on October 7, 2026. The framework is designed to ensure that communications devices sold or used in Nigeria meet the required technical standards.
The Commission explained that buyers checking a device other than the one they are currently using may be required to provide its 15-digit International Mobile Equipment Identity (IMEI) number. The number can be obtained by dialling *#06# on the device.
The NCC advised consumers to confirm that a device is type-approved and verified for use on Nigerian mobile networks before completing a purchase.
The Commission also clarified that consumers buying devices from local sellers are not responsible for obtaining type approval themselves, as the relevant obligations rest with manufacturers, importers, suppliers and other businesses involved in placing devices on the Nigerian market.
