American actor, Tyler James Williams has won his first Golden Globe for his role in mockumentary sitcom, Abbott Elementary.

The 80th Golden Globe Awards ceremony was held on Tuesday night at the Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills, California

Williams played beloved substitute-turned-full time teacher Gregory Eddie on the ABC sitcom, and his performance earned the actor a golden statuette for Best Supporting Actor in a TV series.

The actor during his acceptance speech called attention to the untold stories of real-life public school teachers like Greg and his colleagues, who are perpetually overworked, underpaid, and underappreciated.

“I truly, truly appreciate this, and I pray that this is a win for Gregory Eddie,” an emotional Williams began. “For his story, and for stories like his, that we may understand that his story is just as important as all of the other stories that have to be told out here. Thank you so much for this.”

Abbott Elementary has been a fan favorite since it premiered in 2021, and the accolades received by the show and its cast can speak to its wild success—the mockumentary sitcom has won three Primetime Emmys and been nominated for other awards.

Williams began his career as a child actor, making several appearances on Saturday Night Live, Little Bill, and Sesame Street. He later rose to prominence for playing the role of Chris Rock on the UPN/CW sitcom Everybody Hates Chris between 2005 to 2009. Following this, he starred as songwriter Cyrus DeBarge in the Disney Channel original movie Let It Shine and Noah on AMC horror television series, The Walking Dead.
