SCGN 2026 Conference To Examine AI Governance, Legal Accountability & Data In The Boardroom

The growing adoption of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data-driven technologies is reshaping corporate decision-making and raising critical questions about accountability, oversight and legal responsibility. These issues will take centre stage at the Society for Corporate Governance Nigeria’s (SCGN) 2026 Annual Corporate Governance Conference, scheduled for October 8, 2026, in Victoria Island, Lagos, with virtual participation available.
With the theme, “Artificial Intelligence (AI), Power & Accountability: The New Architecture of Corporate Governance,” the conference will bring together business leaders, board directors, regulators, technology practitioners and governance professionals to examine the evolving relationship between technology, corporate power and accountability.
The programme will explore the subject from regulatory, legal and governance perspectives, while also examining the practical implications of AI and data for boards, corporate leadership and organisational decision-making.
A major feature of the conference will be a fireside conversation on AI and data featuring Mr. Alwin Magimay, Global Head of AI, PA Consulting, UK, and Jania Okwechime, PhD, Partner, AI & Data Leader, Deloitte and Touche. The session will draw on perspectives from leading professional services and technology practitioners to examine the growing role of AI and data in organisations and what their increasing use means for business leadership and governance.
The conference will also feature a keynote address by Dr. Evans Woherem, Founder/Chairman, Digital Africa Global Consult Ltd., alongside insights from Dr. Rabiu Olowo, Executive Secretary/CEO, Financial Reporting Council of Nigeria (FRCN), and Ms. Omolola Oloworaran, Director-General, National Pension Commission (PenCom).
The panel session, moderated by Mrs. Nkemdilim Uwaje Begho, Managing Director/CEO, Future Software Resources Ltd., will bring together leaders from across different sectors to examine the practical governance challenges arising from the adoption of AI.
Panellists include Dr. Karl Olutokun Toriola, CEO, MTN Nigeria and Vice President, Francophone Africa, MTN Group; Mr. Haruna Jalo-Waziri, Founder/CEO, ISTAR Capital Nigeria Limited; Mr. Christopher Ogirri, Associate Director, AI & Data Engineering Lead and Chief AI Officer, PwC Nigeria; and Ms. Amaka Ibeji, AI Governance Expert and Founder, PALS Hub.
The discussion will examine key issues including board oversight of AI, accountability for AI-enabled decisions, regulatory expectations, responsible innovation, emerging technology risks and the governance structures organisations need as technology becomes increasingly embedded in business operations.
Legal Accountability Takes Centre Stage
The governance conversation will begin two days earlier with SCGN’s Legal Pre-Conference on October 6, 2026, organised in partnership with KENNA and Banwo & Ighodalo.
The pre-conference, themed “Directors in the Age of Algorithms: AI Governance, Legal Accountability and the Board’s Duty of Care,” will focus on the legal implications of AI adoption and the responsibilities of directors as organisations increasingly deploy algorithmic and technology-enabled systems.
Discussions will examine directors’ duties, legal accountability, risk and oversight in an environment where technology is becoming an increasingly important component of corporate decision-making.
The legal pre-conference will provide an important foundation for the broader governance conversations at the main conference, connecting questions of directors’ responsibilities with the practical challenges of governing AI, data and emerging technologies.
Together, the two programmes will provide a multidisciplinary platform for examining the intersection of law, regulation, technology, data, corporate leadership and board governance.
The conference is expected to provide participants with practical perspectives on some of the key governance questions accompanying AI adoption, including how boards can effectively understand and oversee the technologies being deployed by their organisations, how accountability should be established for technology-enabled decisions, and what governance safeguards should accompany innovation.
The SCGN 2026 Annual Corporate Governance Conference will be held on October 8, 2026, in Victoria Island, Lagos, with virtual participation available. Registration is open via the SCGN 2026 Conference Registration portal.
