The veteran ‘Institution’ declared unanimous winner after going unopposed for the position of BJAN Chairmanship.

BusinessDay’s Media, Brand and Marketing Communications Editor, Daniel Obi, widely regarded as “The Institution,” has been unanimously elected the new Chairman of the Brand Journalists Association of Nigeria (BJAN) at the association’s 12th Annual General Meeting (AGM).

The event held yesterday at the prestigious Oriental Hotel in Lagos, marks a watershed for the association as Obi takes over from Clara Okoro, the association’s first female Chairman. Okoro’s tenure, spanning three years, has been described as remarkable for its achievements in strengthening the association’s foundation and enhancing its relevance within the media and marketing industries.

In his acceptance speech, Obi expressed deep gratitude to BJAN members for the trust placed in him and outlined his vision for the association’s future. He emphasized the critical role of journalists in combating misinformation, upholding public trust, and championing accountability in brand communications. Highlighting the collective power of the association, he pledged to invest in training, mentorship, and collaboration to ensure that BJAN continues to be a beacon of integrity and innovation in Nigeria’s media landscape.

Acknowledging the efforts of past leaders, including Goddie Ofose, Neta Nwosu, Princewill Ekwujuru, Afolabi Idowu, and Clara Okoro, Obi noted the strong foundation they had laid for BJAN. He vowed to build on their achievements and drive the association to greater heights through a united and visionary approach. He also extended a hand of partnership to brands and marketing communication stakeholders, urging them to sustain their support for BJAN as critical allies in advancing the industry.

Daniel Obi brings a wealth of experience and a distinguished career in journalism and corporate communications to his new role as BJAN Chairman. Currently the Media/Brand/Marketing Communications Editor at BusinessDay Newspapers, Obi has consistently demonstrated exceptional leadership and editorial expertise. Since joining BusinessDay in 2008, where he also served as Education Editor, he has played a big role in shaping the publication’s focus on brand and marketing journalism.

Before the BusinessDay newspaper, he was the Editor of Brand Faces Magazine, a journal in business and brand communications. Prior that, he was  the Media Relations Manager at the Financial Institutions Training Centre (FITC), Lagos.

Beyond journalism, Obi’s career trajectory includes other notable achievements. At the Delegation of German Industry and Commerce for West Africa (DGIC), he managed corporate affairs and external relations, led business delegations to Germany, and initiated impactful programmes that bolstered DGIC’s corporate image. His editorial acumen also shone through at the New Nigerian Newspapers, where he rose from Business Correspondent to Business Editor, later becoming News Editor with a focus on business analysis.

A graduate of the University of Lagos, Obi holds a Master’s Degree and a First Degree in Mass Communication, as well as a Diploma in Journalism from the Nigerian Institute of Journalism (NIJ). Furthering his professional development, he completed an advanced writing and reporting course at the Pan Atlantic University, sponsored by Promasidor Nigeria, after winning the Quill Journalism Award on Corporate Social Responsibility in 2013 and 2014.
